January to now. (2017)
My last post summarised 2016, this one is from January to now.
This year has seen lots of quality projects already, hip hop and other genres too.
I Decided. – Big Sean
FUTURE – Future
HNDRXX – Future
The Never Story – J.I.D
The Chief – Jidenna
Yesterday’s Gone – Loyle Carner
Culture – Migos
Process – Sampha
Gang Signs and Prayer – Stormzy
Restoration of an American Idol – Taylor Bennett
I See You – The xx
More Life – Drake
A few of these I want to touch on.
The Never Story by J.I.D first caught my attention when I saw Dreamville cofounder Ibrahim Hamad posted the album artwork on Instagram at the start of March. I knew off of the bat it was going to be a project that I would want to listen to as it is his debut album under Dreamville. I have listened to the album through 7 or 8 times in the past week since it released, the tracks which stand out the most to me so far are Never (https://itun.es/gb/QNZlib?i=1211054900), this is catchy as hell, and underwear (https://itun.es/gb/QNZlib?i=1211055081) which has a chilling beat and thoughtful lyrics.
Sampha first crept on to my radar when he featured on Drakes Too much (https://itun.es/gb/1E1eQ?i=705910996), since then he has collaborated with other huge rappers such as Kanye and Frank Ocean. His debut album Process is a soulful, calming amalgamation of beautiful piano and his clean, pure voice. Favourite song from the album so far is – (No One Knows Me) Like The Piano (https://itun.es/gb/Xl91db?i=1138217731)
Quickly going to touch on Gang Signs and Prayer by Stormzy, if you haven’t heard this one yet, check it out, its doing wonders for me. I have a feeling this is going to be the Made in The Manor of 2017. I might do a more in depth analysis of this album at a later date after its sunk in a bit more. Favourite song so far – Lay Me Bare (https://itun.es/gb/lDPJhb?i=1200527701)
MORE LIFE, Drake finally dropped it after postponing it from last year. With 22 tracks and loads of features, this “playlist” is going to need its own post.
This year so far I have attended 2 gigs, the first was Canadian duo DVSN, who were in the UK supporting Drakes Boy Meets World Tour, but took time out to have their own headline show at KOKO in Camden. Nineteen85 the singer has one of the most bone rattling voices I have ever witnessed, pure talent. There was a lot of speculation on whether Drake would come out, he didn’t, and I am glad he didn’t. He would have ruined the magic. Favourite song – Sept. 5th (https://itun.es/gb/mTlebb?i=1091615877)
The second was new UK artist, and my long time friend, Isaiah Dreads. Me and Isaiah grew up a road apart from each other and have been close friends for around 7 years. Again, I’m going to do a whole post on this because it was just so good.
I have very high hopes for this year, and I can’t wait to share my thoughts with you. Thanks for reading, G.
