January To Now (2017)

January to now. (2017)

My last post summarised 2016, this one is from January to now.

This year has seen lots of quality projects already, hip hop and other genres too.

I Decided. – Big Sean

FUTURE – Future

HNDRXX – Future

The Never Story – J.I.D

The Chief – Jidenna

Yesterday’s Gone – Loyle Carner

Culture – Migos

Process – Sampha

Gang Signs and Prayer – Stormzy

Restoration of an American Idol – Taylor Bennett

I See You – The xx

More Life – Drake

A few of these I want to touch on.

The Never Story by J.I.D first caught my attention when I saw Dreamville cofounder Ibrahim Hamad posted the album artwork on Instagram at the start of March. I knew off of the bat it was going to be a project that I would want to listen to as it is his debut album under Dreamville. I have listened to the album through 7 or 8 times in the past week since it released, the tracks which stand out the most to me so far are Never (https://itun.es/gb/QNZlib?i=1211054900), this is catchy as hell, and underwear (https://itun.es/gb/QNZlib?i=1211055081) which has a chilling beat and thoughtful lyrics.

Sampha first crept on to my radar when he featured on Drakes Too much (https://itun.es/gb/1E1eQ?i=705910996), since then he has collaborated with other huge rappers such as Kanye and Frank Ocean. His debut album Process is a soulful, calming amalgamation of beautiful piano and his clean, pure voice. Favourite song from the album so far is – (No One Knows Me) Like The Piano (https://itun.es/gb/Xl91db?i=1138217731)

Quickly going to touch on Gang Signs and Prayer by Stormzy, if you haven’t heard this one yet, check it out, its doing wonders for me. I have a feeling this is going to be the Made in The Manor of 2017. I might do a more in depth analysis of this album at a later date after its sunk in a bit more. Favourite song so far – Lay Me Bare (https://itun.es/gb/lDPJhb?i=1200527701)

MORE LIFE, Drake finally dropped it after postponing it from last year. With 22 tracks and loads of features, this “playlist” is going to need its own post.

This year so far I have attended 2 gigs, the first was Canadian duo DVSN, who were in the UK supporting Drakes Boy Meets World Tour, but took time out to have their own headline show at KOKO in Camden. Nineteen85 the singer has one of the most bone rattling voices I have ever witnessed, pure talent. There was a lot of speculation on whether Drake would come out, he didn’t, and I am glad he didn’t. He would have ruined the magic. Favourite song – Sept. 5th (https://itun.es/gb/mTlebb?i=1091615877)

The second was new UK artist, and my long time friend, Isaiah Dreads. Me and Isaiah grew up a road apart from each other and have been close friends for around 7 years. Again, I’m going to do a whole post on this because it was just so good.

I have very high hopes for this year, and I can’t wait to share my thoughts with you. Thanks for reading, G.

2016 (The Catch Up)

2016 (The Catch Up)

0 To 100 / The Catch Up (https://itun.es/gb/hJnO1?i=899733720)

I know we’re already over a quarter into 2017, but I wanted to do a little catch up on 2016 for my first proper post. Hip hop gets crazier every year, and last year was, indeed, very crazy. With albums from numerous new school legends, and from a lot of new artists, it was very hard to pick my top songs, albums and artists. I also attended a number of gigs in the second half of 2016, and got to see some new talent and one of my all time favourite UK artists.

Kano has been a bar setter in the UK scene for over a decade, both his first and latest albums are in my top 25 hip hop albums ever. On the 6th of October I finally got to see him at the engine rooms in Southhampton. Joined on stage with a small brass band, it was a real experience in such a cosy venue.

Favourite song from Home Sweet Home – Nite Nite (https://itun.es/gb/8YVve?i=72809125)

Favourite song from Made in The Manor – T-shirt Weather in The Manor (https://itun.es/gb/8YVve?i=72809125)

Up next was some new talent from Dreamville signee Bas, who was supported by Cozz (also signed to Dreamville), The Hics and Earthgang. J. Cole has a real eye for signing the hottest artists, the Dreamville line up seems to expend by an artist or two every year. Live at the Islington O2 in London, Bas played a lot of songs from his latest album Too High To Riot (https://itun.es/gb/Vzawab), which has features from the boss, J. Cole, Cozz and The Hics. Night Job (https://itun.es/gb/Vzawab?i=1079511200) being in my top 10 songs of 2016.

22/11 at the O2 in Brixton was Chance The Rapper, possibly the hottest hip hop artist in the game right now. This was the second time I have seen Chance (first being wireless festival 2014), and he was just as good as the first time. Coloring Book was one of the most talked about mixtapes of last year, winning Grammys and a tonne of other awards. For me Coloring Book is not as good as his previous mixtape, Acid Rap, but still great, with some killer features. But all in all, with support from D.R.A.M., a fantastic performance.

Favourite Chance song – Acid Rain

Favourite Chance song from Coloring Book – Same Drugs (https://itun.es/gb/C3Qwcb?i=1113239812)

The last gig of the year went to Post Malone, the US artist who hit fame with the release of White Iverson a few years ago. His debut album Stoney, is a reflection of his rock star life style and humble beginnings. Post’s stage presence is something else, maybe due to the fact he was fucked off his head, he had Electric in Brixton buzzing and the energy through the roof. Very excited to see and hear where his future leads him.

Favourite Post Malone track – Congratulations (https://itun.es/gb/IeJXfb?i=1170616920)

He explained during the gig that this song is fuelled by all the fake friends he had suck up to him after White Iverson hit success, an instant classic.
